This Sunday, November 17, marked seven years since the publication of the first edition of ‘Lugar de Fala’<\/em> (Where We Stand<\/em>). The debut title of the Feminismos Plurais<\/em> (Plural Feminisms<\/em>) Collection, the book, in Djamila’s own words, “made an indelible impact on the public debate in Brazil.” On her Instagram profile<\/strong><\/a>, the Brazilian philosopher shared a text commemorating the date and teasing that new projects are on the horizon!<\/p>\n

7 Years Since the Publication of Lugar de Fala<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Today marks 7 years since ‘Lugar de Fala’ was launched. It was the first title in the Feminismos Plurais Collection and made an indelible impact on public debate in Brazil. At the first launch in Rio de Janeiro in 2017, we closed a street in Lapa to welcome over 3,000 people. And it continued like this in the following years: thousands of people in Belo Horizonte, Natal, Salvador, S\u00e3o Lu\u00eds, Porto Alegre, Fortaleza, Rio Branco, Bras\u00edlia, Teresina, S\u00e3o Paulo, and hundreds of smaller cities across various Brazilian states. We held launch events in every region of Brazil. I traveled extensively throughout the country, breaking attendance records in several cities.<\/em><\/p>\n

Translated into six languages, ‘Lugar de Fala’ is a required reading for the entrance exam of the Federal University of Paran\u00e1 and is included in various undergraduate and postgraduate bibliographies both in Brazil and abroad. We have donated tens of thousands of copies of the Collection to numerous initiatives, and as of 2025, we have surpassed 600,000 books sold.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Feminismos Plurais Collection is a landmark in the Brazilian publishing market\u2014a watershed moment. This independent project paved the way for many Black authors to gain recognition and even influenced major publishers to follow suit, as we can see today. Fourteen titles have been published, seven translated into French, and three into Italian. We managed to internationalize the project. In total, under the publishing imprint I coordinate, we have published 27 books since 2017, all written by Black authors.<\/em><\/p>\n

Today, from the U.S., where I\u2019m participating in events launching the English edition of Lugar de Fala (Where We Stand) in various cities, I celebrate the courage to write this book and the tireless work to democratize Black authorship in Brazil.<\/em><\/p>\n
