Candombl\u00e9 is a living religion, rich in tradition and complexity, where songs, rituals, and orix\u00e1s form a rooted structure recognizable in any terreiro<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Certain liturgical elements are universal: for example, everything that belongs to Oxal\u00e1 must reject dend\u00ea<\/em> oil, as this element destabilizes rather than harmonizes him. But some divergences, when explored, offer profound lessons.<\/p>\n

Because Candombl\u00e9 is based on oral tradition and the heritage of major houses, some interpretations may vary\u2014resulting not in conflict, but in a rich mosaic of nuance. In some cases, an orix\u00e1 may be considered autonomous in certain traditions, while in others, the same entity is seen as a manifestation of another. Ayr\u00e1 is a striking example of this dynamic.<\/p>\n

In some branches, Ayr\u00e1 is venerated as an independent orix\u00e1, with his own attributes, associated with whirlwinds and closely connected to Oxal\u00e1. He embodies peace, symbolizing critical serenity amid chaos. In other traditions, however, Ayr\u00e1 is understood as a quality or aspect of Xang\u00f4, the ancestral king of Oy\u00f3, known for his rule over thunder and justice. If seen as a \u201cquality,\u201d then Ayr\u00e1 would be a way Xang\u00f4 manifests on Earth.<\/p>\n

At the heart of this confluence\/divergence is one of the best-known it\u00e3s<\/em> of Candombl\u00e9: the story of Oxal\u00e1\u2019s journey to the kingdom of Oy\u00f3. Oxal\u00e1 was unjustly imprisoned for seven years\u2014we\u2019ll revisit this tale in detail in a few weeks, when this series concludes. But for now, what matters is Oxal\u00e1\u2019s return home, escorted by Ayr\u00e1, the head of Xang\u00f4\u2019s guard.<\/p>\n

Ayr\u00e1 carried Oxal\u00e1 on his back during the day, and at night, lit a fire and entertained the elder with stories and clever remarks. His lightness and humor made him a cherished companion on the road.<\/p>\n

According to other it\u00e3s<\/em>, Ayr\u00e1 lived in Xang\u00f4\u2019s kingdom and served him loyally, but their opposing personalities led to a rupture. While Xang\u00f4 is a king who dislikes being challenged, Ayr\u00e1 is the very embodiment of questioning amid order. He is a whirlwind. One night by the fire, Ayr\u00e1 shared with Oxal\u00e1 his frustrations with Xang\u00f4, blaming him for the unjust and prolonged imprisonment.<\/p>\n

By then, Oxal\u00e1 had already bathed in sacred waters and was at peace. The wise elder recognized that Xang\u00f4 and Ayr\u00e1\u2014both dear sons\u2014were like water and oil. The best course was separation. Upon arriving home, Oxal\u00e1 didn\u2019t request but rather informed Xang\u00f4 that Ayr\u00e1 would now live with him. For Xang\u00f4, this brought relief to his kingdom, yet also personal pain, feeling betrayed by Ayr\u00e1. For Ayr\u00e1, once head of Xang\u00f4\u2019s troops, it was a new beginning\u2014his true place.<\/p>\n

Ayr\u00e1 is not a king in any of his roles, yet he remains an orix\u00e1, prompting reflection on the different functions and balances that uphold a kingdom, a community, or a religion like Candombl\u00e9. While Xang\u00f4, as the ancestral king of Oy\u00f3, represents centralized power and justice, Ayr\u00e1, through his challenges, takes the role of a guardian who balances authority with critical insight. This teaches us that strong leadership is not built solely on issuing commands, but on coexisting with forces that complement and question it.<\/p>\n

The relationship between Ayr\u00e1 and Xang\u00f4\u2014marked by tension, separation, and symbolic reconciliation\u2014is a mirror of the dynamics that govern both human and spiritual realms. The it\u00e3<\/em> that tells of their split, mediated by Oxal\u00e1, carries deep meaning: it reminds us that even in the divine sphere, conflicts are not resolved by erasing differences, but by recognizing and valuing them.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Candombl\u00e9 offers us a profoundly pluralist worldview, where hierarchy and autonomy coexist in complex, yet complementary ways. Ayr\u00e1 doesn\u2019t need to be king to matter; his importance lies in the calm he brings to chaos, the critique that nourishes justice, and the ability to move between the realms of power and peace. May he bless us in these turbulent times in Brazil.<\/p>\n
