The event at Teatro Città on August 2, presented by Alma Talks, opens a series of events with audiences across Brazil

Rio de Janeiro holds a special place in the history of “Lugar de Fala”. In November 2017, when the book first arrived in bookstores, its Rio launch drew such a large crowd that Rua Moraes e Vale, in Lapa, had to be temporarily closed. More than three thousand people gathered to hear the Brazilian philosopher.

The scene, a rare one for a book launch, anticipated what the work would become: a landmark of contemporary Brazilian thought, translated into several languages, including English, as “Where We Stand” (Yale University Press) and chosen as one of the best Brazilian nonfiction books of the 21st century in a poll of writers and critics organized by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo.

Nearly nine years later, the “Marvelous City,” as Rio is affectionately known, is once again writing itself into the book’s story. On August 2, starting at 7 p.m., at Teatro Città, Djamila Ribeiro opens the national tour for the expanded edition of the book in Rio de Janeiro. The new edition is published by Rosa dos Tempos, an imprint of Grupo Editorial Record.

The lecture is presented by Alma Talks, a project that has been filling theaters across Brazil with some of the country’s leading thinkers.

“Beginning the tour in Rio de Janeiro carries a symbolic meaning. It was there that, in 2017, I held the launch that became part of the history of ‘Lugar de Fala’, when we filled Rua Moraes e Vale, in Lapa. Returning now, as the tour for the expanded edition begins, connects this new chapter in the book’s life to my own journey,” says Djamila.

The philosopher’s relationship with Rio audiences includes other memorable chapters. In May 2022, the three thousand tickets for the conversation Djamila led with Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie in Rio sold out in less than ten minutes.

The reunion between the two thinkers now takes shape in the pages of “Lugar de Fala”. Chimamanda wrote the preface to the new edition, which also features an introduction by Portuguese artist and thinker Grada Kilomba.

Revised, updated, and expanded, the Rosa dos Tempos edition revisits the concept that gives the book its title, exploring its political, social, and economic dimensions in greater depth. It incorporates new data, intellectual references, and reflections developed by Djamila during her time teaching at PUC-SP, New York University, and MIT, where she is currently a visiting professor.

The concept of “place of speech” starts from the idea that everyone speaks from a particular social position. The point is not to bar anyone from addressing certain subjects, but to understand the position from which each person speaks.

Launched in June at Espaço Feminismos Plurais (Plural Feminisms Space) in São Paulo, to a full house, the expanded edition also marks a new phase for the publishing project begun in 2017: the arrival of the Coleção Feminismos Plurais (Plural Feminisms Collection) at Rosa dos Tempos, a leading Brazilian publisher of feminist works.

Launch of the expanded edition of “Lugar de Fala” | Alma Talks The event at Teatro Città on August 2, presented by Alma Talks, opens a series of events with audiences across Brazil Rio de Janeiro holds a special place in the history of “Lugar de Fala”.
