The next stops on the launch tour for the expanded edition of Lugar de Fala (Place of Speech) will be presented in partnership with Alma Talks<\/em><\/p>\n

Southern Brazil is next on the launch tour for the expanded edition of Lugar de Fala (Place of Speech)<\/em>. On September 15 and 16, Djamila Ribeiro will give her \u201cLugar de Fala (Place of Speech)\u201d lecture in Curitiba and Porto Alegre, respectively. The events renew her partnership with Alma Talks.<\/p>\n

The talks will explore questions that run throughout the Brazilian philosopher\u2019s work: Who can speak about an experience? Who is heard when they speak? And what determines which voices are granted legitimacy in society?<\/p>\n

In Curitiba, the event will take place at Teatro do Col\u00e9gio Marista Santa Maria (Marista Santa Maria School Theater), located at Rua Professor Joaquim de Matos Barreto, 98, S\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o.<\/p>\n

In Porto Alegre, the lecture will be held at Teatro Fiergs (Fiergs Theater), located at Avenida Assis Brasil, 8787, Sarandi.<\/p>\n

Drawing on concepts from political philosophy and the ideas that gave rise to the book of the same name, Djamila examines race, gender, inequality, representation and the different social positions from which knowledge is produced.<\/p>\n

The central issue is not simply who can speak about a particular experience, but how social structures shape access to speech and, consequently, to being heard.<\/p>\n

In the book, the Brazilian philosopher draws attention to this dimension when she writes: \u201cSpeaking is not limited to uttering words; it is also about being able to exist.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This formulation moves the concept away from an interpretation based exclusively on individual experiences and toward an analysis of the power relations that authorize certain groups to produce knowledge, occupy public spaces and have their perspectives recognized.<\/p>\n

This distinction also helps challenge a recurring interpretation of \u201cplace of speech\u201d as a mechanism designed to prevent people from discussing certain subjects. In the book, Djamila argues that everyone occupies a social position. What differs are the historical conditions from which each group speaks, as well as the degree of legitimacy granted to their voices.<\/p>\n
