Djamila Ribeiro has wrapped up the southern leg of her nationwide Lugar de Fala (“place of speech”) tour after drawing thousands of people to events in Curitiba, Porto Alegre, and Florianópolis.

In Porto Alegre and Florianópolis alone, events drew a combined 1,800 people, according to figures the author herself shared in an interview with the Brazilian news outlet Metrópoles: 1,000 in Porto Alegre and 800 in Florianópolis.

In an Instagram post, the Brazilian philosopher thanked audiences in all three state capitals and highlighted the time she spent meeting readers after her talks.

“We spent hours and hours signing books, talking, and exchanging ideas,” Djamila wrote. She also thanked everyone for the warm welcome she received throughout the region and gave a special shout-out to her friend Mauricio Rocha Ngozi.

The tour is part of the launch of a revised and expanded edition of Lugar de Fala, published in June by Rosa dos Tempos. The new edition features four previously unpublished chapters, updated data, and reflections the author has developed since the book’s original publication in 2017.

In her talks, Djamila explores central themes of the book, including the inequalities that shape who gets to produce knowledge, who can occupy public spaces, and whose voices receive social recognition.

“It’s incredibly moving to feel so much warmth and see the power of this discussion up close. That’s what made this visit to southern Brazil unforgettable!” Djamila concluded.
