Djamila Ribeiro takes part in international conference in Amsterdam on the global challenges faced by women

Djamila Ribeiro is already in Amsterdam to participate tomorrow, Sunday, in the international conference Women Unite!, held as part of the activities marking International Women’s Day. Organized by the city’s municipality, the event brings together intellectuals, journalists and human rights advocates from different countries at the Royal Theatre Carré to discuss the contemporary challenges faced by women.

Welcomed by the Mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsema—the first woman elected to the position in the city’s history—the conference is part of the municipal March 8 program and aims to promote global dialogues on gender equality, democracy and social justice.

As an international guest, Djamila will participate in a panel dedicated to the theme “War on Women,” where she will present reflections on the situation of women in Brazil and the structural challenges related to violence, inequality and the struggle for rights. The Brazilian philosopher will also join discussions with thinkers from different regions of the world, expanding international dialogue on feminism, racism and human rights.

Among the confirmed participants are Ukrainian lawyer and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Oleksandra Matviichuk, recognized for her work defending civil liberties, and Nigerian writer and public intellectual OluTimehin Kukoyi. The gathering also brings together authors, researchers and journalists working on issues related to democracy, freedom of expression and gender equality.

Awarded in 2019 by the Prince Claus Fund, a Dutch cultural institution that recognizes significant contributions to culture and human rights in the Global South, Djamila Ribeiro will also take part in a parallel event in Amsterdam organized by the foundation alongside human rights organizations in the country.

For the philosopher, participating in international forums is an opportunity to strengthen bridges between diverse experiences and broaden the global debate on social justice:

“In my interventions, I will bring reflections on the situation of women in Brazil and the possible dialogues with public intellectuals from different parts of the world. We, women, will win this war.”
