With a Packed Auditorium, Djamila Ribeiro Launches the English Edition of “Lugar de Fala” at MIT
Filling the iconic Bush Room to maximum capacity, Djamila Ribeiro hosted a profound debate yesterday (30th) on the structures that define who has the right to speak and who is heard in contemporary society. The launch event for Where We Stand at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) was organized by the MIT Brazil Program, with support from Women’s and Gender Studies and MIT International Studies.
“I am grateful to MIT Brazil, in the person of the dear Rosabelli Coelho, and to the dear host professor Joaquin Terrones for organizing the event. Thanks also to the Women’s and Gender Studies Program and MIT International Studies for supporting this launch,” Djamila celebrated on social media.
The discussion was moderated by Professor Paloma Duong, from the Latin American Studies department, and the gathering saw a massive turnout of students, researchers, and visitors, becoming a space for direct exchange between the author and the audience.
“It was a beautiful launch event for Where We Stand, the English edition of Lugar de Fala, at MIT. A full house, great debate, and exchanges. What a beautiful day! I thank Professor Paloma Duong from the Latin American Studies department for the brilliant moderation,” she highlighted.
Education and Resistance
Before the main event, the MIT visiting professor gave a lecture on femicide, framing the discussion through fundamental references from Mexican, Argentine, and Brazilian feminists. This dialogue reinforces Djamila’s commitment to building a Global South epistemology capable of diagnosing and confronting the structural violence that permeates the American continent.
“It is a great joy to be at MIT and have the opportunity to engage with so many incredible people. It truly was a great day! Thanks for supporting my work, MIT!” Djamila concluded.
