Djamila Ribeiro at FLIP 2026: Three Events in Paraty

The Brazilian philosopher’s schedule includes discussions on the legacy of Lugar de Fala, the next phase of the Coleção Feminismos Plurais and challenges facing the publishing industry

Djamila Ribeiro will take part in three events at the Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty, or FLIP, on July 23 and 24.

The program will feature discussions on the history and impact of Lugar de Fala, the relationship between feminisms and intolerance, the publishing industry and the social and political struggles that shape Brazilian society.

The first event will take place Thursday, July 23, at 7 p.m. at Casa Record. During the panel “Uma década de Lugar de Fala” (“A Decade of Lugar de Fala“), Ribeiro will speak with journalist Livia Vianna about the book’s trajectory since its publication in 2017 and the changes its central concept has brought to public debate. The book was published in English as Where We Stand (Yale University Press, 2024).

The event is part of Casa Record’s free programming. Now in its fifth year, the venue will welcome more than 40 authors, researchers, journalists and artists from July 23 through 25. During FLIP, the Brazilian philosopher will also present a revised and expanded edition of Lugar de Fala, now published by Rosa dos Tempos. The panels held at the venue will be recorded and later posted on Grupo Editorial Record’s YouTube channel.

The conversation offers an opportunity to revisit the political meaning of a concept frequently reduced to questions of who is allowed to speak about a particular subject. In Lugar de Fala, Ribeiro examines how social position shapes access to speech, the legitimacy granted to certain voices and the concrete conditions under which people are heard.

The concept does not establish who may or may not address a subject. Instead, it identifies the hierarchies that allow some perspectives to be treated as universal while others remain marginalized or silenced.

Feminisms

On Friday, July 24, at noon, Ribeiro will join Sidnei Barreto Nogueira, a Candomblé priest who holds a Ph.D. in linguistics, for the discussion “Feminismos e Intolerância” (“Feminisms and Intolerance”) at Casa Record.

The event will examine the next phase of the Coleção Feminismos Plurais (Plural Feminisms Collection), an initiative created to broaden access to concepts developed by intellectuals from historically marginalized groups.

The conversation will highlight Intolerância religiosa (Religious Intolerance), Nogueira’s contribution to the collection.

Since its creation, the publishing project has combined accessible language with intellectual rigor to address subjects including structural racism, incarceration, whiteness, intersectionality, masculinities and LGBTQIA+ rights.

Ribeiro’s FLIP schedule will wrap up with a 6 p.m. panel at Casa Folha on the continuing impact of Lugar de Fala, the publishing industry and Brazil’s political and social contradictions.

After FLIP

Beginning July 30, Casa Folha will offer a new course taught by Ribeiro on the concept of lugar de fala. The classes will examine its origins, address common misconceptions and explore topics including identity, identity politics and intersectionality.
