At FLUP 2026, Djamila Ribeiro joins opening program and leads Feminismos Plurais discussion

Djamila Ribeiro joins FLUP 2026 on Wednesday (Sept. 23) alongside Ana Maria Gonçalves, the honoree of the 16th edition of Festa Literária das Periferias (Literary Festival of the Peripheries). At Teatro Carlos Gomes in Rio de Janeiro, the two writers will take part in the panel “As filhas das filhas das filhas: Uma carta de Kehinde para Dona Antônia” (“The Daughters of the Daughters of the Daughters: A Letter from Kehinde to Dona Antônia”), which draws a connection between central figures in their respective works. On Friday (Sept. 25), Ribeiro returns to the festival to moderate a discussion devoted to the Feminismos Plurais (Plural Feminisms) collection.

Wednesday’s conversation begins at 7 p.m., following the official opening, with historian and researcher Angélica Ferrarez serving as moderator. The panel title places Dona Antônia, Djamila’s grandmother and the addressee of Cartas para minha avó (Letters to My Grandmother), in dialogue with Kehinde, the protagonist of Ana Maria Gonçalves’s novel Um defeito de cor (A Color Defect). The connection between their stories speaks directly to the theme of FLUP 2026.

Under the theme “As Filhas das Filhas das Filhas” (“The Daughters of the Daughters of the Daughters”), the festival explores legacies passed down through generations, stories that have resisted erasure, and Black women’s contributions to knowledge, language, community, and the shaping of the future. In its official presentation of the 2026 edition, the festival draws on the stories of Vó Antônia and Kehinde to examine the changes experienced by successive generations of Black women, including those associated with affirmative action policies introduced in Brazil during the 21st century.

In Cartas para minha avó, Djamila uses her relationship with Antônia as a starting point to revisit episodes from her childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. A benzedeira, a Brazilian folk healer with extensive knowledge of medicinal herbs, her grandmother holds a central place in the family memories recounted by the writer.

The presence of Ana Maria Gonçalves broadens that dialogue. This year’s FLUP honoree became the first Black woman elected to the Academia Brasileira de Letras (Brazilian Academy of Letters) in 2025. Her best-known novel, Um defeito de cor, is woven throughout the visual identity and programming of this year’s festival. The event places the “letter from Kehinde” at the center of its opening program.

Feminismos Plurais

On Friday, Djamila will moderate the panel “Coleção Feminismos Plurais, uma kizomba do pensamento: poder, amor e fé” (“Feminismos Plurais Collection, a Kizomba of Ideas: Power, Love, and Faith”) from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at Salão Guarani. The discussion brings together three authors from the collection she directs: Adilson Moreira, author of Racismo recreativo (Recreational Racism); Carla Akotirene, author of Interseccionalidade (Intersectionality); and Sidnei Nogueira, author of Intolerância religiosa (Religious Intolerance).

The discussion comes as Feminismos Plurais enters a new phase in its publishing history. This year, the collection moved to Rosa dos Tempos, an imprint of Grupo Editorial Record (Record Publishing Group), with backlist titles being reissued and new books planned. An expanded 476-page edition of Lugar de Fala (Where We Stand), Djamila’s book that launched the project in 2017, was published in June.

FLUP 2026 runs through Sunday (Sept. 27), with activities at Teatro Carlos Gomes, Praça Tiradentes, and other venues in downtown Rio de Janeiro. Admission is free.
