Djamila Ribeiro announced the publication of Travessias (Crossings, as a free translation) in Portugal. The book brings together the texts she wrote during her first two years as a columnist for Folha de S.Paulo and includes a new introduction aimed at Portuguese readers.

“I’m very happy to hold in my hands my newest published book. Travessias was the result of years of reflection and blessed occasions,” she celebrated in a post on social media.

The idea for the work came up in Lisbon, during a meeting with the great Zeferino Coelho, from publisher Caminho, responsible for the works of José Saramago.

“In addition to being a very dear host, Zeferino is the first and, so far, only ‘Nobel Prize editor,’ due to his decades-long relationship with José Saramago,” recalled the Brazilian philosopher.

Djamila highlighted the unprecedented nature of the project and thanked the professionals at Folha for the partnership.

Travessias was also the result of many conversations within my other home, the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo. It was unprecedented for a foreign publisher to gather columns published in the newspaper. And I am deeply grateful to Sérgio D’Ávila, the newspaper’s director, and journalist Flávia Lima for joining the initiative.”

Djamila also made a special dedication to Portuguese writer Grada Kilomba, with whom she shares a sisterhood built through art and critical thought.

“I dedicate the book to my dear sister Grada Kilomba, whom I always miss. Being a Brazilian woman published directly in Portugal is a somewhat original move,” added the Brazilian intellectual.

The book is already available in bookstores across Portugal and, soon, we will have news about a special tour through several cities in the country.
