Djamila Ribeiro drew more than 1,000 people to the opening of the national Lugar de Fala tour, held on Sunday, August 2, at Teatro Città in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. Presented in partnership with Alma Talks, the premiere featured a book signing, a presentation of the expanded edition and a conversation with the audience.

“I want to thank the entire Alma team, especially Eduardo Matos and Gabriela Gallo, for a partnership that got off to such a fantastic start!” Djamila wrote on Instagram.

Among those in attendance were a delegation from the Sindicato das Trabalhadoras Domésticas (Domestic Workers’ Union) and groups traveling from Niterói, Maricá and Macaé. Their participation was made possible by brands and event supporters who purchased tickets to be distributed as invitations.

“I want to recognize each and every one of those who helped make this night so special: Rio Open, Skala Cosméticos and Baterias Moura. I also want to extend a special thank-you to Luiza Trajano, of Magazine Luiza, and Tainá de Paula. I am also grateful to my publisher, Record, for coordinating the attendance of educators and booksellers,” she wrote.

Djamila also highlighted the energy in the room, thanking everyone who took part in the first step of this new chapter for Lugar de Fala.

“And I want to thank everyone who bought a ticket and came to the theater to be part of this milestone in my career and in the journey of a book that has crossed so many barriers and continues to build bridges between different social locations. The room was buzzing, and I could feel a revitalizing energy that will stay with me as the tour continues.”

Since its original publication in 2017, the concept of lugar de fala (place of speech) has moved beyond academia and entered political debates, television programs, schools, universities and social media. Its growing visibility has also led to interpretations that depart from Djamila’s original formulation, particularly when the term is used to prevent certain people from taking part in a discussion.

The tour creates a space to revisit the concept directly with the public. By combining a presentation of the book, an audience conversation and a signing session, the series brings theory and lived experience closer together through the participation of audiences in each city.

The Brazilian philosopher will visit seven more cities before the end of the year. The next event is scheduled for September 15 at Teatro do Colégio Marista in Curitiba.

The Rio de Janeiro premiere showed that the reach of Lugar de Fala extends beyond the circulation of a concept.
