Djamila Ribeiro will be in Belém on August 25 and 26 for a series of events bringing together literature, critical thought, and institutional efforts to address inequality.

On August 25, at 7 p.m., she will sign copies of the expanded edition of Lugar de Fala (Where We Stand) at Livraria Leitura (Leitura Bookstore), in the Boulevard Shopping Belém mall.

The following day, the Brazilian philosopher will take part in the II Jornada de Boas Práticas para a Equidade Racial (2nd Forum on Best Practices for Racial Equity), organized by the Tribunal de Contas do Estado do Pará (Pará State Court of Accounts — TCE-PA), on the theme “Race, Gender, and Social Justice — Paths to Addressing Structural Inequalities.”

Djamila’s visit to Belém will give readers an opportunity to engage with the new edition of a book that brought a fundamental Black feminist debate to a broader audience: the social conditions that allow some voices to be recognized as legitimate while others have historically been denied that legitimacy. The expanded edition also revisits the paths of Black women who produced knowledge and built forms of resistance long before their contributions received the recognition they deserved.

Announcing the schedule on social media, Djamila shared her excitement about the visit:

“Hello, Belém, Pará! I’m coming on August 25 for a signing of the new edition of Lugar de Fala at Livraria Leitura in Boulevard Shopping. I want to thank my publisher, Rosa dos Tempos, and the bookstore for organizing this event. I’m so happy everything worked out and that I’ll be able to give the people of Belém a hug,” she said.

On August 26, the program moves from readers to an institutional setting. The II Jornada will be held at the Escola Judicial do Poder Judiciário do Estado do Pará (Judicial School of the Pará State Judiciary), with participation restricted to signatories of the Pacto Interinstitucional Pró-Equidade Racial (Interinstitutional Pact for Racial Equity).

“There will also be a book signing for those registered for the event. I thank TCE-PA for the invitation and Renata Souza for organizing this trip,” Djamila wrote.

The forum is part of the Pact, created in 2024 by the Pará State Court of Accounts. The initiative brings together public institutions, private organizations, and civil society groups to promote racial equity, with an emphasis on education, guidance, and actions to confront racism.

Vera Lúcia Santana Araújo, a substitute justice of the Tribunal Superior Eleitoral (Superior Electoral Court), will deliver the keynote address at 11 a.m. In the afternoon, participating organizations will present their experiences with issues such as combating gender-based violence, the inclusion of Quilombola women, legislative change, and the promotion of diversity. Djamila Ribeiro will close the event with the talk “Lugar de Fala.”
