Djamila Ribeiro launches new edition of Lugar de Fala at Janela Livraria in Shopping da Gávea

Journalist and writer Yasmin Santos will moderate a conversation before a book signing at Janela Livraria in Gávea

Readers in Rio de Janeiro will have another chance to attend the launch of the expanded edition of Lugar de Fala (Rosa dos Tempos/Editora Record).

Following the success of the launch held at Teatro Città last Sunday, August 2, Djamila Ribeiro will be at Shopping da Gávea this Wednesday, August 5, at 7 p.m.

The event will begin with a conversation in Theater 3 at Estação Claro de Cinema, on the fourth floor, moderated by journalist and writer Yasmin Santos. Ribeiro will then hold a book signing at Janela Livraria, on the third floor.

Seating for the conversation is limited. Tickets will be available at Janela Livraria beginning at 6 p.m., with a limit of two per person.

New edition

The edition is part of the new phase of the Feminismos Plurais series. Lugar de Fala (“place of speech”) examines how people’s social positions shape who gets to speak, who is heard, who has access to knowledge and who has a say in decision-making. The edition features a foreword by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and an introduction by Grada Kilomba.

Explaining the concept behind the title, Ribeiro writes that “everyone has a place from which to speak because we are talking about social location.” This argument counters the reading that the concept is meant to prevent certain people from taking part in public debate. Instead, the book analyzes the hierarchies that lead some discourses to be treated as universal while making it harder for others to be heard.
