Angola: Djamila Ribeiro to Discuss place of speech at Event in Luanda on December 12
Invited by Associação Lumwenu, the philosopher will discuss women’s representation and power in Angola’s capital
Djamila Ribeiro will be in Luanda, the capital of Angola, on December 12 for an event on the theme Lugar de Fala: Mulheres, Representação e Poder no Século XXI (Place of Speech: Women, Representation, and Power in the 21st Century). Organized by Associação Lumwenu, the event will begin at 9 a.m. at the EPIC SANA Luanda Hotel.
Framed around the question “Who decides our place?”, the event will explore women’s participation in positions of power, social representation, and the challenges of increasing the presence of historically marginalized voices in political and social decision-making.
The Brazilian philosopher announced the trip on social media and said she looks forward to talking with Angolan audiences.
“We’ll discuss our voices, the spaces we occupy, and the changes we can bring about through dialogue and reflection.”
The discussion will draw on the ideas Ribeiro develops in Lugar de Fala (Where We Stand – Yale University Press), recently released in an expanded edition. In the book, the philosopher examines how structural inequalities shape different groups’ access to positions of power and to participation in public life.
The conversation takes on particular significance in Angola, which shares with Brazil a history shaped by Portuguese colonial rule and the transatlantic slave trade.
In her post, the writer also expressed her excitement about the visit:
“I’m very happy about this event and hope to see everyone in Luanda!”
Tickets will be available soon through the Uzeka platform. Ticket prices and the date ticket sales will begin have not yet been announced. Updates will be shared on the social media accounts of Ribeiro and Associação Lumwenu.
Event details: Saturday, December 12, 2026, at 9 a.m., at the EPIC SANA Luanda Hotel, on Rua da Missão in Luanda, Angola.
