Djamila Ribeiro Celebrates 1,000 Tickets Sold for the Rio de Janeiro Premiere of the ‘Lugar de Fala’ Tour

The event launches a nationwide tour centered on the expanded edition of the book, which features four new chapters, updated data, and contributions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Grada Kilomba

In an Instagram post, Djamila Ribeiro celebrated the sale of 1,000 tickets for the opening of the national Lugar de Fala tour. The event is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 2, at Teatro Città in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. It will launch a nine-city tour devoted to the expanded edition of the book, published by Rosa dos Tempos, an imprint of Grupo Record, nearly a decade after its original release. A limited number of tickets are still available for those who would like to attend.

For the Brazilian philosopher, the event marks a first in her career.

“For the first time, I’ll be appearing in theaters with paid admission. I admit I was nervous, but I went for it!” she wrote.

Djamila also announced that the book signing will begin at 6 p.m. She will take the stage at 8 p.m. to officially open the tour, organized in partnership with Alma Talks.

The premiere comes less than two months after the new edition arrived in bookstores. Originally published in 2017 as the first title in the Coleção Feminismos Plurais (Plural Feminisms Collection), the book was revised to incorporate updated data, new intellectual references and research developed by the author while teaching at PUC-SP, New York University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she currently teaches as a visiting professor.

The expanded edition also responds to the concept’s growing presence in public debate. Over the past nine years, the expression “lugar de fala” (place of speech) has appeared in political discussions, television programs, universities and social media, although it has not always been used in the sense developed in the book.

Djamila explains that the concept should not be used to prevent people from discussing certain subjects. Instead, it provides a framework for examining how social position affects a person’s ability to speak, be heard and have their knowledge recognized as legitimate.

At the heart of the discussion are the social conditions shared by different groups and the ways race, gender, class and sexuality shape power relations. From this perspective, a multiplicity of voices challenges discourses that present themselves as universal while silencing other points of view.

The tour will bring this discussion to a series of in-person events. After Rio de Janeiro, Djamila will travel to Curitiba on Sept. 15; Porto Alegre on Sept. 16; Florianópolis on Sept. 27; Salvador on Oct. 10; São Paulo on Nov. 8; Ribeirão Preto on Nov. 11; Fortaleza on Nov. 26; and Recife on Dec. 6.

The sale of 1,000 tickets for the opening event demonstrates the public reach of a book created to make discussions advanced by historically marginalized groups more accessible.

In theaters, this new chapter of Lugar de Fala moves the experience from individual reading to collective listening — a shift that speaks to one of the central questions that have run through the book since its publication in 2017.
