Djamila Ribeiro makes her Canadian debut with an extra session in Montreal
For the first time, Djamila Ribeiro will bring her reflections to a Canadian audience. The invitation came from Blue Metropolis / Metropolis bleu, one of the world’s most prestigious literary festivals, whose 28th edition centers on the theme: “Words for Understanding One Another.”
Montreal’s response exceeded initial expectations. After tickets for the first panel sold out, the organizers opened an extra session to accommodate local demand. In total, the schedule includes three moments:
April 25 (10 a.m.): “Morning Meet-up – To Brazil,” a private professional meeting between Quebec authors and Djamila Ribeiro, moderated by Ingrid Bejerman.
April 25 (5 p.m.): “Lugar de Fala: Uma conversa com Djamila Ribeiro.” The main event, held in Portuguese at Salle Jag, Hotel 10.
April 26 (10 a.m.): “Who Gets to Speak: A Conversation with Djamila Ribeiro.” An extra session held in English at Espace Godin, Hotel 10.
The participation is supported in an essential way by the Brazilian Consulate in Montreal and the Instituto Guimarães Rosa, reinforcing the importance of the international circulation of Brazilian intellectual production.
“I’m very excited to be with you. Given that tickets for the first night sold out, we opened a new session — which makes me even happier,” the Brazilian philosopher celebrated on her social media.
The Blue Metropolis Festival is known for its mission to bring together different languages and cultures through the pleasure of reading and writing, promoting intercultural coexistence. This year, it will feature 150 authors and cultural mediators across 110 events and activities in nine languages.
Her time in Montreal confirms the growing circulation of a thinker who has transformed Brazilian public debate by repositioning issues such as structural racism, place of speech, and political responsibility. The MIT visiting professor arrives in Canada not as a ceremonial presence, but as an author whose intellectual production has crossed borders.
