On March 25, Djamila Ribeiro visited Catanduva, a city in the interior of São Paulo state, for the first time to speak about anti-racist education. The event, aimed at educators from the municipal school network of the city and surrounding areas, was organized by Senac.

“I was invited by Senac, which has been doing a beautiful job raising awareness in accordance with Law 10.639/03. It was remarkable to engage in dialogue with more than thirteen hundred people and to get to know part of the local Black movement,” Djamila wrote on her Instagram profile.

Law 10.639/03 makes it mandatory to teach “Afro-Brazilian history and culture” within subjects already included in the curricula of elementary and high school education. It also establishes November 20th as Black Consciousness Day in the school calendar.

“I thank Senac for the invitation and congratulate them on the initiative, as well as everyone who attended. Onward,” Djamila concluded.
