Djamila Takes Part in Festa da Boa Morte in Cachoeira

The Brazilian philosopher shared moments from the celebration in the Recôncavo Baiano (Bahia’s Recôncavo region) over the weekend

Djamila Ribeiro looked back on her days in Cachoeira and Salvador, Bahia, focusing on the Festa da Boa Morte (Festival of the Good Death), held from August 13 to 17 by the Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte (Sisterhood of Our Lady of the Good Death). The writer attended the traditional celebration in the Recôncavo baiano and spoke about the warm welcome she received in the state.

“The days were so beautiful and intense that I don’t even have the words to describe them. Experiencing the Festa da Irmandade de Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte in Cachoeira, getting to know the women personally at a private gathering, being recognized and welcomed by them, receiving so much warmth from people on the street… it’s going to take me a while to process everything. Everything was unfolding so beautifully that I even helped take up the collection at Saturday’s Mass,” she wrote in a social media post.

The trip continued in Salvador, where Djamila had a different experience from her previous visits to Bahia’s capital.

“It was the first time I went to Salvador simply to explore the city and rest. I had only ever been there for work. And this immersion in history will continue to resonate with me for a long time,” she wrote.

Djamila also thanked her friend Dione for the experience and closed the post by honoring the women who left the deepest impression on her days in Cachoeira:

“Long live the Irmandade da Boa Morte!”

Held every August, the Festa da Boa Morte has been registered as part of the state of Bahia’s intangible cultural heritage since 2010. The celebration peaks on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption in the Catholic liturgical calendar. The festivities are led by the Irmandade, a lay sisterhood of Black women over the age of 40 whose history spans more than two centuries.
