Djamila Ribeiro Joins the Brasília International Book Biennial This Saturday for a Panel on Democracy, Diversity, and Representation

Free event at the Museu Nacional da República runs through Sunday, featuring talks, panel discussions, and live music

Djamila Ribeiro will take part this Saturday (August 22), from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m., in the panel “Democracia, diversidade e representatividade” (“Democracy, Diversity, and Representation”) at the 6th Bienal Internacional do Livro de Brasília (Brasília International Book Biennial). The session is part of the event’s program at the Museu Nacional da República, in Brasília. Admission is free with a reserved ticket.

This year’s theme is “Ler o Amanhã” (“Reading Tomorrow”). The Biennial began on August 17 and runs through Sunday, August 23, marking its return after a four-year hiatus. Organizers expect approximately 30,000 people to attend over the course of the seven-day program.

The panel’s title brings three themes central to Djamila’s intellectual work into focus: participation in public debate, the conditions that shape the representation of different social groups, and the relationship between inequality and access to positions of power. From this perspective, representation is not simply a matter of identifying who is present in a given space. It also requires examining which groups have the conditions to participate and produce knowledge.

Djamila’s appearance comes as she tours in support of the expanded edition of Lugar de Fala (Where We Stand) (Rosa dos Tempos / Record), published in June 2026. The new edition includes four previously unpublished chapters, an introduction by philosopher Grada Kilomba, and a foreword by Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. In April, Folha de S.Paulo named the book one of the best Brazilian nonfiction titles of the 21st century.

Biennial Program

Since August 17, the Biennial has brought together writers, musicians, researchers, and artists for panel discussions, book launches, workshops, and performances. On Friday, August 21, singer Criolo takes part in the conversation “As narrativas do Século XXI — Trajetória, território e lar” (“21st-Century Narratives — Trajectory, Territory, and Home”).

On Saturday, before Djamila’s session, Zeca Baleiro takes part in the discussion “Ler o amanhã: poesia, música e as histórias que transformam” (“Reading Tomorrow: Poetry, Music, and the Stories That Transform Us”).

On Sunday, Elisa Lucinda and Waleska Barbosa discuss “Literatura, identidade e liberdade: quais histórias queremos levar para o amanhã?” (“Literature, Identity, and Freedom: Which Stories Do We Want to Carry Into Tomorrow?”).
