“A Milestone in My Career”: Djamila Ribeiro Launches ‘Where We Stand’ at Yale University
“And it was on a Thursday, the day of Oxóssi, that I launched the English edition of ‘Lugar de Fala’ at one of the most prestigious universities in the world, Yale University.”
On September 26th, Djamila Ribeiro launched ‘Where We Stand’ at the home of the publisher responsible for the book’s release in the United States, Yale University Press.
“Being able to present the book here, debating with faculty members, was a milestone in my career. I was very happy with the interest from the students and the reception from the faculty,” she celebrated on her Instagram page.
Milestone for Black Feminism
The Brazilian philosopher, who has been a visiting professor at New York University since the beginning of September, also spoke about the significance of the moment for black feminism.
“Being a black Brazilian woman in this place, breaking free from controlling images, is something precious. Only we know how much they try to impose on us the roles of objectification and submission at all costs. Breaking these boundaries, through the front door, is something that always carries the strength of ancestry. And it was all filmed for my documentary!” wrote Djamila, remembering the filming of the movie about her life by Nicole Gullane and Liz Dórea, which will soon be released.
Acknowledgments and Recognition
Djamila also thanked everyone involved in the project of ‘Where We Stand’, with special thanks to Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
“Gratitude to dear editor Abbie Storch and the entire team at Yale University Press for the excellent work and for making my work available in English. Gratitude to the faculty and all the departments at Yale University that made this encounter possible. Special thanks to the very dear Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, who was a student at Yale, for writing the foreword of the book! The arrow has been launched!” she concluded.
