Antiracism, Fashion, and Career: Djamila Ribeiro Speaks to Marie Claire Magazine

Djamila Ribeiro graces the cover of Marie Claire Magazine for the December-January issue. In an exclusive interview, the Brazilian philosopher discusses the progress and setbacks of the antiracist agenda amid rising conservatism, while emphasizing the urgency of a decolonial debate.
In an Instagram post, Marie Claire also mentions Djamila Ribeiro’s autobiographical documentary, currently in production.
“She celebrates the power of her fashion-forward image and reflects on how feeling comfortable with fashion changes the world’s perception of women in academia,” the post notes.
The Marie Claire Magazine feature further underscores Djamila’s trajectory “as one of Brazil’s leading contemporary intellectuals, achieving milestones that transcend national borders,” recalling her recent role as a guest lecturer at New York University.
“She accepted the invitation from New York University, NYU, where she has been teaching Latin American critical thought and Global South feminisms, primarily through the lens of Brazilian women writers,” the article adds.
In the United States, there is a tradition of critical race theory studies, but it is an absolutely self-centered academia. That is my challenge. I believe it is important to arrive here and bring discomfort. I come from a tradition where I do not have to bow my head. If these people do not know us, it is time they learn about us and start reading our work too, Djamila states in an excerpt highlighted by Marie Claire.
The full interview is also available on the Marie Claire website.
