Djamila Ribeiro launches ‘Where We Stand’ in Atlanta and Athens

Continuing the launch tour of ‘Where We Stand’ (Yale University Press), last week, Djamila Ribeiro visited two renowned institutions in the Southern United States: Spelman College in Atlanta and the University of Georgia in Athens.
“I had the honor of delivering two distinguished lectures at Spelman College and the University of Georgia. At historic Spelman, I had the honor of being at the first college for Black women in the US, founded in 1881, a space full of history and struggle. The reception from the professors and the university, which made sure to record the entire event for its archives, deeply moved me,” wrote the Brazilian philosopher on her Instagram profile, also highlighting her visit to the University of Georgia.
“In Athens, the joy was renewed. I was warmly received by professors and students of the Portuguese department, and then I had the pleasure of giving a public lecture that brought together various areas of knowledge. It was a joy to have a full auditorium,” she celebrated.
At the end, the event organizers prepared a surprise for Djamila.
“As a special touch, the academic community surprised me at the happy hour after the lecture with a performance by the talented Maria Kamila, a doctoral candidate recognized for her participation in The Voice 2019. To the tune of ‘Ribeirão de Luz’ by Margareth Menezes, a song that always deeply moves me, I could not hold back my emotions,” revealed the philosopher, who, after this first tour of ‘Where We Stand’, returns to New York to resume teaching at NYU.
“There were many moments that remain in my heart. The tour of the University in Georgia, the recordings for the documentary, and the celebration banquets were some of them. I met many incredible people interested in the multiplicity of voices. Tomorrow, I land in New York to continue the schedule of classes at NYU. But I am certain that I will return to this land where I was so happy. Georgia on my mind…”
