On April 15 and 16, Djamila Ribeiro visited the state of Tocantins for the first time to participate in the First Seminar on Anti-Racist Education, held in the capital city, Palmas. The event was aimed at educators from the state public school network.

During the seminar, the Brazilian philosopher was welcomed by members of the Natividade community, where she had the opportunity to learn and dance Suça, a traditional local rhythm. Also in attendance was Cida Ribeiro, a quilombola leader and co-author of Quilombola Women: Territories of Black Female Existence, published by the Sueli Carneiro Editorial Label, coordinated by Djamila.

“I was deeply moved to learn that some educators traveled from remote areas, taking two days to arrive and needing two more to return,” Djamila wrote on her Instagram profile.

She also thanked the Quilombola School Education and Ethnic-Racial Relations Center (NEEQ-ERER), represented by Karoline Rebouças, for organizing the event and for their care and support.

On the following day, Djamila visited the Mumbuca quilombola community, known for its collective work with capim dourado (golden grass). Students from the local school welcomed her with music and poetry. She shared her joy in discovering that her books are part of the school’s curriculum.

“It was an honor to step into the community of D. Miúda, the queen of golden grass, and to hear stories of Tia Doutora and so many others that are part of our History,” she wrote.

Djamila thanked the Tocantins State Department of Education for the invitation, especially Secretary Fábio Vaz, and expressed appreciation to the local media for their warm reception. She ended her visit with a trip to Jalapão, stating she left “with a heart full of gratitude.”
